Reflection:
My classroom website platform through Schoology was completed to satisfy teacher requirements of maintaining some form of a blog or website. I had to first choose a platform that would incorporate everything I feel is necessary for a successful classroom website, such as taking assessments, participating in discussions, submitting homework assignments, and posting resources. I chose Schoology as this platform and thus incorporated all of the above-mentioned items into my website. My classroom website has folders for each unit. Within these folders, there are classroom documents, assignment submission links, formative assessments, and discussion boards for student participation. I created this website independently after registering for a free account and attending a workshop on the benefits of Schoology in the classroom.
Standard 3.1 sets the precedent for candidates to model and facilitate effective classroom management and collaborative learning strategies through the use of digital tools and resources. The creation of this website requires the modeling of an appropriate format for the display of resources. Other teachers can also use this model format as they set up their specific classroom websites in a similar fashion. The website also serves as a model for classroom management through a blended environment in an effort to increase the use of digital tools by students.
The Schoology website serves as a method to facilitate discussion through topic-specific discussion boards based on classroom content. These discussions allow for deeper learning about classroom material and also collaborative discussion among students with similar opinions on the topic. My Schoology website also facilitates quick formative assessments and the ability for students to submit assignments. I am also able to facilitate student-teacher conversation through this assignment submissions and work with students during the revision process as needed.
Switching my classroom website to Schoology has been invaluable to the management and learning in and out of my classroom. Prior to this website, I used a similar platform but it did not allow student logins and the ability for students to collaborate and discuss classroom content. From the creation of this classroom website, I learned how to manage an entire online classroom platform and design a streamlined approach that maximizes student use of digital tools. If I could recreate this classroom platform, I would not do separate classes for each class period, I would only do separate classes for each subject. By doing the website in this manner, there would be even more collaboration and discussion between students of different classes. It would also be interesting to have discussion between students in different subjects to gather different opinions and perspectives on content.
The classroom website on Schoology has impacted faculty development and student learning. The students are able to revisit material and have discussions with their peers to further collaborate on classroom content. Students are also able to learn new content through lecture postings on the website and learn technology skills through the navigation of the website itself. Additionally, the knowledge of my use of Schoology to the faculty has prompted curiosity and many teachers have started exploring on their own and thinking of implementing this website in their classrooms. The impact can be assessed based on how many teachers begin implementing Schoology as their classroom website. Additional impact on students can be assessed through end of the year surveys and performance on statewide assessments.
