1.4 Diffusion of Innovations & Change
Candidates research, recommend, and implement strategies for initiating and sustaining technology innovations and for managing the change process in schools. (PSC 1.4/ISTE 1d)
Artifact: Action/Evaluation Plan
Reflection:
The action and evaluation plan was completed to determine five major goals of the school and make a plan for implementation. In completing the action and evaluation plan, the goals of the plan were developed based on the results of the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) Analysis. This action plan was designed to set goals and expectations for a one year action plan to improve technology integration in the school. I completed this plan individually based on the SWOT data with minimal input from the school principal when I was able to reach him as this analysis was completed during the summer.
Standard 1.4, Diffusion of Innovations and Change sets the precedent for research, recommendations, and implementations of strategies to initiate and sustain technology innovations and manage this change process in schools. This artifact demonstrates my ability to develop an action evaluation plan based on the SWOT analysis to be implemented in my school. To begin the development of this action plan, the SWOT analysis had to be analyzed to determine gaps in the current technology system at the school. These gaps were further researched to develop five major goals for the school for the next year. The five goals required additional research to determine strategies for implementation, a timeline for the goal, and budget or funding sources. Stakeholders were also involved as they recommended people to fill the role of responsibility in the implementation.
Further recommendation required discussion with school administrators and stakeholders to determine a plan of action and to adjust the five goals as needed to maximize implementation. To implement the action and evaluation plan, additional training will be required regarding formative assessment tools and learning management systems for teachers to receive the necessary training to be successful. Further implementation schoolwide would also require access to and review of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) student standards for lesson plan incorporation. Successful implementation will be reached once a data team is in place and the goals are a priority for all staff members.
In completing this action and evaluation plan, I learned a significant amount of information about the technology the school has access to and just how little is really being implemented. I was surprised to find that there was not even the beginnings of a data team at the school, so I knew this had to be an important goal in the action plan. I also learned how to find and seek out funding and relate this to the budget of attaining each goal. I also enjoyed being able to plan strategies for success and make a timeline for the implementation of each goal. In the future or if I could redo this action and evaluation plan, I would seek out additional funding opportunities or options to help fund the goals and provide the capability for different goals that allow for the purchase of more technology resources.
The work of the action and evaluation plan was enlightening to some of the school stakeholders. Many were not aware of the ISTE standards and were slightly alarmed they were not including these standards in their current lessons. Additionally, the staff members were very receptive to the other goals involving formative assessment apps and updating learning management systems. The official action plan has not been adopted, but discussions are underway to develop a more comprehensive action plan using this artifact as a foundation. Impact will ultimately be assessed based on the effectiveness of the goals and whether those goals are met by students and staff within the year time frame.
